Portugal’s cheapest places to buy houses

For those on a tight budget but hoping to get their foot on the property ladder in Portugal. Here’s some good news.

A recent study has revealed that those who could not afford to buy a house in Portugal can still do so in at least five municipalities: Carregal do Sal, Nisa, Mortágua, Góis and Belmonte.

According to Idealista, Mortágua, a municipality in the district of Viseu is the cheapest place in Portugal to buy property with prices starting from €447 per square meter. Nisa comes close on the heel with prices ranging from €467 m2 along with Góis for €467 m2 and followed closed by Belmonte for €481 m2 and Carregal do Sal in Viseu, where the cost per square metre is €490.

The study also unveils many other locations in Portugal where properties can be purchased equally cheap. For instance in Tondela, a municipality in the central Portuguese subregion of Dão-Lafões, properties can be bought for as low as €491 m2, followed by Aragnil, a town located in the municipality of Coimbra District with prices starting from €496 m2, Fronteira  (€496 m2) a municipality in Portalegre District and Vouzela where prices of properties drop as low as €497 m2.

While the report discloses many other town and municipalities, where investors and first time buyers can find cheap deals, industry pundits have criticised Idealista’s report arguing that there are many other parts of Portugal where you can snap up a property for less than €447.
