Portugal aiming to provide “housing for everyone”

The residential market is facing great challenges in Portugal. However the “great concern” of the Portuguese government and the entire real estate sector in the country is “to ensure that there is adequate housing for everyone”, promised the Portuguese Secretary of State for Housing Marina Gonçalves.

Speaking to Madrid-based real estate portal Idealista/news, the Socialist law maker explained that she is working in conjunction with the private sector and is now “eagerly” waiting for them to “present affordable rental projects”. “My major concern, which is obviously the concern of the sector, but also of all families and young people in particular, is to be able to ensure that there is adequate housing for everyone. This is the basis of all the public policies that we are building … …” , Gonçalves revealed to Idealista.

The private sector has a “fundamental role in the creation of public policies” in the area of housing, the minister told the news portal on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Portugal Real Estate Exhibition (SIL). To overcome this challenge, the State Secretary who is also a jurist, admitted that the Portuguese government recognises the important role the private sector has to play in overcoming the housing challenge and indicated that she has developed a close relationship with real estate developers in order to articulate a joint public-private response.

Portuguese private sector invited to invest and work in conjunction with the Government in the supply of houses.

“It is always very important … … to work with the sector so that we can strike this kind of balance between public policy and the work that companies have at our disposal. Our biggest challenge is to … to be partners in the promotion of public policies and create responses that are effectively accessible houses for families ", Gonçalves soon after a guided tour of the real estate and construction fair.

The minister considers that private developers “play a key role in the creation of public policies” and, therefore, hopes “that we will be able to bring them together to create new affordable rental responses … ….”.

“The Central State has a very high priority in what is its direct role, which is the promotion of the public housing stock, being a direct investor in what are housing responses”, the minister for state explained. “And this is our investment priority and will continue to be, but we know and are aware of the importance of the private sector and the role they can also play in reinforcing this public response”, clarified the Secretary of State for Housing”.
