Portuguese tourism sector maintains momentum in November 2021

The tourism accommodation sector hosted 1.5 million guests and 3.6 million overnight stays in November 2021, corresponding to YoY rates of change of +265.5% and +287.7%, respectively (+115.2% and +137.9% in October, in the same order), the Portuguese National Institute of Statistics (INE) announced today in a press advisory.

According to INE, the tourist arrivals in the Portuguese accommodation sector November 2021 were lower than in the same period in 2019, signifying a decrease in the number of guests and overnight stays by 17.0% and 12.4%, respectively.

INE’s data reveals that in November, the country’s domestic market accounted for 1.3 million overnight stays and the external markets accounted for 2.3 million. Likewise, compared to November 2019, there were decreases both in overnight stays from residents (-3.4%) and in those from non-residents (-16.6%).

The press release further points out that the overnight stays registered in the first eleven months of 2021 increased by 40.4% (+36.0% for residents and +45.3% for non-residents). Compared to the same period in 2019, overnight stays decreased by 47.7% (-10.8% for residents and -63.3% for non-residents).

In November, 33.8% of the tourist accommodation establishments were closed or had no movement of guests (25.3% in October).
