Portugal Welcomes Remote Digital Nomad Workers To Relocate

The narrative lately is all about the surge in Omicron cases, closures of businesses, schools and cancelling of air flights and live events. While doom scrolling through social media, you’re missing out on something. Amidst the chaos and madness enveloping us, there are amazing opportunities available for the brave and intrepid. Under the radar, there is a stealth trend that could change your life.

Countries around the world that have been economically impacted by the virus outbreaks have opened their doors to digital nomads. They cater to wanderlust folks who are able to work remotely and excited about embarking upon an international adventure. Digital nomads, mainly white-collar knowledge workers, initially started relocating temporarily to beach towns, ski slopes and then ventured to far-off, international, exotic locations

A report by Jack Kelly in Forbes reveals that during the pandemic, several countries offered incentives to attract remote workers. Kelly points out that “as their economies were mainly tourism based, they were in dire need of revenue. Inducing knowledge workers to live and work in their country was a great way to bring in much needed revenue and taxes. Barbados, Estonia, Bermuda and Georgia have all opened their doors to Americans, inviting them to come, work, pay taxes and contribute to the economy.”

Independent workers and freelancers are being offered long-term visas to relocate.

The article outlines that Portugal is one of the countries offering long-term visas to freelancers and independent workers. For those unaware, in the past few years, the boom of tourism in Portugal has won the country many awards, including “Europe’s Leading Destination” since 2017, and “World’s Leading Destination” from 2017 to 2019 and one of the best places to retire in the world.

Known for its wealth of seafood, spices and olive oil, Portuguese cuisine relies heavily on the Atlantic Ocean and the produce grown throughout the country. Beyond the popular Portuguese codfish - Bacalhau as it is known commonly, sardines and octopus are other desired Portuguese seafood dishes. It is widely acknoweldge that Portugal’s rich gastronomic tradition changed the culinary world.

Likewise, this Southern European country on the Iberian Peninsula also generated a buzz among expats, including entrepreneurs and digital nomads, who moved to different cities and regions of the country including the capital city, Porto, and Algarve region.

The piece also details that Cayman Islands, Spain, Argentina and Malta among others are welcoming digital nomads and that in an effort to revitalise the “dying villages,” Spain plans to entice foreign workers with tax incentives. Full article can be found here.

Regardless, Portugal undoubtedly remains a sound investment choice not only for investors but also to digital nomads for various reasons such as affordable cost of living, warm climate, a tourism hotspot and needless to say the real estate value compared with other European countries. ,
