Portugal hosts 2.1m tourists in September

Portugal’s tourist accommodation sector hosted a record 2.1 million guests and 5.6 million overnight stays in September 2021, the National Statistics Institute (INE) has reported. This figures equate to an increase of 52.3% and 58.4%, respectively.

In a press release, the Portuguese data tracker indicated that the domestic market contributed with 2.6 million overnight stays and increased by 26.8% in September 2021, continuing to exceed the levels of the same period of 2019 (+15.6%). Overnight stays of non-residents doubled compared to September 2020 (+100.7%) and amounted to 3.0 million but were about half of those recorded in September 2019 (-43.9%).

According to INE, The total revenue registered in the tourist accommodation establishments amounted to EUR 355.5 million and the revenue from accommodation was EUR 268.6 million. Compared with September 2019, total revenue decreased by 29.1% and revenue from accommodation declined by 29.8%.

The total revenue generated in the first nine months of 2021 have already exceeded the value registered for the whole year of 2020. In this period, there were increases of 33.3% in total revenue and 35.3% in revenue from accommodation. Compared with the same period of 2019, there were rates of change of -53.0% and -52.7%, respectively.

The press release between January and September 2021, considering all means of accommodation, there were 11.1 million guests and 30.2 million overnight stays, corresponding to increases of 14.5% and 18.7%, respectively.
